Building a better life, shaping a sustainable future

By LODHA

June 05, 2021

This World Environment Day, we pledge to become carbon-neutral by 2035.

During the last few decades, we have grown as a company, and a nation, at an unprecedented rate. The coming decade will also see an ever increasing pace of urbanization and the rising of household income, which will offer us immense opportunities for growth. All this is happening in the backdrop of time running out to fight climate change.

We have always cared about the environment because we care about our children, and believe that the future generations deserve to be given a better earth than what we inherited.

Over the past few years, climate change and sustainable development have become ever contextual. We have realized that we have a much larger responsibility, by being the largest real estate company in the market; we know that we will be setting the benchmarks for high quality and sustainable development, across price segments in India. So, it is important to develop the right perspective towards climate change, and the significant transition and physical risk global warming confronts us with.

We recently partnered with RMI and RMI India to envision and roadmap a zero carbon future. We now aim to achieve carbon neutrality in our operations by 2035 or before, this goal is backed by our roadmap prepared in collaboration and with insights from of RMIs leadership and carbon free buildings team and RMI India.

The journey towards decarbonisation of real estate

Aiming for a zero carbon future is the need of the hour. Currently, buildings account for 35% of energy consumption in India and this number is growing. Companies like us can lead the change to help to reverse this increase. The opportunity is significant especially when read with the estimates that the urban infrastructure in India will see a doubling of size in this decade. In India, the real estate sector provides maximum job creation and GDP multiplication driving the economic growth in the country. Over 250 ancillary industries such as cement, steel, brick, timber, building materials etc. rely on the industry. Therefore, decarbonising the building's portfolio also drives sustainability in the industries' upstream and downstream of the value chain.

Eliminating the carbon emissions across supply chain along with the operational carbon emissions is the key to not only help India meet Paris Climate Agreement targets, but to also make a meaningful impact on Climate Change.

Lodha's Sustainable Vision & Bringing It to Life

Defining over-arching North Star goals for sustainability, organisations can create long-term value and receive support from various stakeholders in this transformative journey. Our North Star goal of carbon neutrality by 2035 adheres to an internationally recognised commitment framework.

At Lodha, we have developed and started to implement a decarbonisation roadmap that outlines key actions and milestones. We aim to carve our path and support the wider transition towards net zero carbon buildings in India. However, this path is a multi-year journey. Engaging workshops with all stakeholders, leveraging renewable energy supply options, applying integrative design principles and building performance targets are some of the key practices we integrate in our processes as we move on to build a zero-carbon environment.

This can happen when we take the approach, as Amory Lovins (Cofounder and Chairman Emeritus, RMI) says, "Buildings should create delight when entered, happiness and health and productivity when occupied, regret when departed. They should look like they grew there."

In India's fight against climate change, we will continue building the world's finest developments while preserving nature and her resources. The commitment remains to make a difference and we work towards the larger goal shared by all, a goal to leave no carbon footprint.
