Mega Infrastructure Projects in Mumbai

From montages of thousands flocking to the metropolis daily to cinematic shots of the sea, Mumbai has been hailed as the city of dreams with good reason. Whether you are looking for personal growth or professional advancement, Mumbai can make your dreams come true. As the city has grown in population, with affordable homes and luxury apartments in Mumbai peppered across localities, its infrastructure has been upgraded to make life seamless for residents. Here are five megaprojects that will come into being in 2024 and transform the way residents of Mumbai travel, commute, and live.

Mumbai Trans-Harbour Sea Link (MTHL)

The Mumbai Trans Harbour Sea Link, also known as Atal Setu, is said to be the largest sea bridge in India and was inaugurated in early 2024. The bridge spans over 21.8 km and will connect Sewri in South Mumbai to Chirle in Navi Mumbai, cutting travel time between the two points from 2 hours to 20 minutes. Mumbai’s new bridge project, which stretches over water for around 16 km, features six 3.5-metre-wide lanes. The sea link begins at Messant Road in Sewri, where it connects with the Eastern Freeway, and ends at Shivaji Nagar in Navi Mumbai. The reduced travel times will likely bring great relief to commuters and reduce congestion on the city's roads.

Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA)

Navi Mumbai has emerged as a prime spot for residential and commercial purposes in the last few decades. The long-awaited Navi Mumbai Airport is going to improve the area's infrastructure even more by offering aerial connectivity. Spanning over a 2,000+ acre site, it will be the second international airport in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and can carry two crore passengers annually. While the first two phases of the airport will be operationally ready by December 2024, the remaining three phases are expected to be complete by 2032. The Navi Mumbai Airport will allow a whole section of the city to access air travel with greater ease and reduce the burden placed on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA).

Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP)

The Mumbai Coastal Road Project, which was in the works for some time, became functional in 2024. Coastal Road's southern stretch spans across 10.58 km and is an eight-lane grade-separated expressway. It will connect the Princess Street Flyover in Marine Drive to the Bandra Worli Sea Link via a network of arterial roads, underground tunnels, and traffic changes. The primary attraction of the project is the twin tunnels that will pass beneath the Arabian Sea near Girgaon to Chotti Chowpatty at Marine Drive. The first phase of the Coastal Road will speed up suburban commutes to and from South Mumbai.

Mumbai Metro Line 3

Mumbai's upcoming metro network is expected to reduce travel times and bumper-to-bumper traffic on the city's streets. Mumbai Metro Line 3 will connect Colaba, Bandra, and SEEPZ. Phase I of Metro Line 3, stretching between Aarey and Bandra-Kurla Complex, opened earlier this year and is the city's first underground metro corridor. Once Phase II is completed, the line will connect to the Cuffe Parade business district in South Mumbai. The line, also known as the Aqua Line metro, will connect the North-Central areas of the city to South Mumbai, providing connectivity for commuters across the board.

Samruddhi Mahamarg

Another megaproject that is expected to become fully functional in 2024 is the Samruddhi Mahamarg, an expressway spanning over 701 km and connecting Mumbai and Nagpur via Thane. Officially called the 'Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg,' the expressway will feature six lanes and open in two phases. While the first phase, connecting Nagpur to Bharvir in Igatpuri, is operational, the remaining section will become functional in 2024. The route will run through many of Maharashtra's popular tourist destinations and numerous districts while reducing travel time between Mumbai and Nagpur to almost 7-8 hours.

With so many megastructure projects in the pipeline, residents of Mumbai will enjoy greater connectivity within the city and to surrounding areas as well.
