Explore the transformation of an apartment at Lodha Trump Towers by Mili Savekar

The brief was quite specific for interior designer, Mili Savekar: reimagine the comfort and familiarity of the client's previous and older colonial-era home (think ornate panelling, classic moulding, and cornices) and import it into the stunningly spacious and contemporary structure of their new apartment on the 22nd floor of Lodha Trump Towers.

Seated in the opulent apartment she designed that exudes understated elegance, Mili mentions that her clients were clear that they didn’t want the house to feel really loud and in-your-face, but rather emit a feeling of subdued sophistication. That became the core tenet of the design process - to play with a neutral colour palette and overlay it with earthy tones and textures.

The clients' love for open spaces opened up a world of possibilities - especially, the concept of moving walls around thanks to which Savekar was able to extract the fourth bedroom from the apartment’s open plan living and dining space. Pops of colour, metal and earthy accents were then used to liven up the space. In fact, the metal panelling done in the living area conceals an entire wall of hidden storage. Made out of aged brass, the custom-made and hand-done metal layer becomes an element of signature appeal for the room. Another interesting feature of the living room is the mirrored ceiling. The idea of reflecting the entire expanse of the room and parts of the balcony on to the ceiling really opens up the space and maximises natural light for the entire home.

In accordance with the earthy palette of the home, Savekar opted for numerous wall installations, light fixtures, and art pieces with metal accents that add dimension to the aesthetic of the space while tying it all together into one harmonious experience. Upholstery items have also been chosen with care such that they seamlessly fit into the vision she had for the space - embroidery with a touch of gold thread, multi-texture carpets and throws, neutral palette linen with pops of earthy colour.

Meanwhile, the second master bedroom of the apartment opens up into a beautiful walk-in wardrobe space that is equipped with a dressing area at the back of its partition. A gorgeous cladding of marble with soft lighting and a slightly darker colour choice for this section, really elevates the space and transports the user into a luxury state of mind while still maintaining a sense of privacy.

To not risk monotony or repetition around the aesthetics of the residence, Savekar also chose to play with shapes and form in the kind of furniture she sourced. An angled sofa proves to be the ideal perch to look out the generous deck at the urban cityscape and it is complemented by an asymmetrically-shaped coffee table made out of carved marble. The beautiful handmade yet geometrically precise lights placed all over the house are made by Leviosa Designs, while the standout chandelier at the apex of the living space is custom-made. Savekar’s favourite piece in the house is a totem lamp made out of alabaster. Its unique shape and the character it adds to the corner it is placed in appeals to her artistic sensibilities. Savekar specifies that all the furniture in the home is created by Maanavi Homes while the striking metal wall art pieces around the house are sourced from White Domus.

Seated on the standout sofa and gazing at the awe-inspiring Mumbai skyline, Mili Savekar is quizzed about what she thinks makes a space spectacular. She elaborates on the transformation of potential into reality and the freedom she, as an artist, is offered to innovate and execute her vision. To then stand in such a space and take in the fruits of her labour, that is what makes a space so spectacular!
